Stern & Wild filmmaker to mark 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz in powerful new documentary

We are delighted to announce Stern & Wild filmmaker Toby Trackman will direct The Last Musician of Auschwitz, a feature documentary commissioned by BBC Arts to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. It is being produced by Glasgow-based indie Two Rivers Media and is co-funded by Access Entertainment, the company behind 2023’s Oscar and BAFTA-winning film The Zone of Interest.

The 90-minute film will explore the stories of musicians who created and performed music in Auschwitz and other concentration camps during the Holocaust. It will feature an interview with the now 99-year-old cellist Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, the only surviving musician from the Auschwitz orchestras, and will highlight the stories of four other musicians who composed and played music in the camps: Adam Kopyciński, Szymon Laks, Martin Rosebery D’Arguto and Ilse Weber. It will also showcase a rediscovered work by Weber which has not been performed since the war, and the first ever recording of a lullaby composed by Kopyciński in Auschwitz.
