Director Jane Mingay on her brilliant Pauline Black bio doc
Stern & Wild filmmaker Jane Mingay discusses what inspired her to make her feature documentary Pauline Black: A 2-Tone Story in this great article in British Cinematographer. The film is a portrait of the remarkable Pauline Black, founding member and lead singer of 2-Tone band The Selecter, author, actor and champion for racial equality. In the article, Jane points to the parallels between the political and cultural tensions of the 1970s and 80s when Pauline first came to prominence as a performer and those of today, and argues that speaking out for what you believe in has never been more important. It’s a really interesting read.
The film is produced by Tigerlily Two Productions and supported by Screen Scotland. It was commissioned by Sky Arts. In addition to Director, Jane is a Producer alongside Tigerlily’s Nikki Parrott, while Exec Producers are Mark Thomas (for Screen Scotland) and Jack Oliver (for Sky).
The film premiered at the BFI London Film Festival in October last year and has been on tour in the UK and Republic of Ireland as part of the Doc’n Roll festival programme with special screenings and Q&As (usually with Pauline and Jane). It was recently awarded the second annual Doc’n Roll Audience Award. The next event is Friday 24 January in London. For details of this and future screenings, click here.
