Jane Mingay most recently produced and directed Pauline Black: A 2-Tone Story, a feature documentary about the legendary singer that premiered at London Film Festival and CPH:DOX and went on to have a big theatrical release as well as a high profile airing on Sky. On TV, Jane also very recently produced and directed a prime-time documentary for Channel 4 about Jamie Oliver and dyslexia and neuro-diversity, Jamie’s Dyslexia Revolution.
Jane has a strong track record of directing talent as well as making films about complex social issues, including ‘Paloma Faith: As I Am’, ‘Sophie Morgan: Fight to Fly’ and ‘Disgraced’.
With journalistic, photographic and documentary training, Jane works on a wide variety of subjects and to each project brings a strong authored vision which encompasses skilled and layered storytelling, defined narrative, a strong visual identity and a deep understanding of when to use actuality, archive, graphics and interviews to create the best film and serve the story. Jane has a solid journalistic background and is a celebrated and award-winning photojournalist working internationally for 12 years before re-training as a documentary director. From this, Jane brings her photographic eye, ability to understand atmospheres, be non-obtrusive and a deep understanding of aesthetics and how audiences consume and relate to images and footage.
Jane is highly skilled at finding and developing her own stories as well as working to a brief and developing a brief on already commissioned programmes. A very sensitive and empathetic person, she is extremely attuned to her subjects and creates strong long-lasting relationships. She also has lots of experience of working on a wide variety of subjects and environments: from conflict zones with hostile environments training to the inner workings of Parliament to music festivals. Jane has worked in a multitude of places often working under extreme pressure: intimately following Prime Ministers, being embedded with soldiers on the frontline of Afghanistan, following the aftermath of humanitarian disasters as well as gaining trust and filming contributors intimately over many years.
